A Woman's Place is at the Top
As of this week, two more women (Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Michelle Bachelet of Chile) have joined the ranks of female heads of state. They differ from predecessors and cohorts in that they embraced their maternalism to win their positions (Lydia Polgreen and Larry Rohter, "Where Political Clout Demands a Maternal Touch”, NY Times). For example, Ms. Johnson Sirleaf embraced the nickname Ma Ellen and in speeches often compared Liberia to a sick child needing a mother’s tender, loving care.
Their elections confirm that motherhood and leadership are not mutually exclusive concepts. But any mother of a three-year-old could have told you that.
